About Me

I completed my doctoral degree in 2004 and was licensed in 2006 after completing advanced training in neuropsychology at the University of Michigan Medical School. I originally worked at Western State Hospital conducting both civil and criminal evaluations for individuals with suspected brain dysfunction. I moved to Madigan Army Medical Center and serve as the Chief of the Neurocognitive Clinic. Over the years, I have held positions on various scientific and policy committees at the hospital and national level, including neurocognitive assessment and training workgroups, scientific reviewer for research, and mock surveyor for Joint Commission preparation. In addition, I have been heavily involved in program development. I assisted in the development and served as the Chief of a multidisciplinary clinic that included health psychologists, neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, biofeedback specialists, and social workers.

Clinically, I provide both inpatient and outpatient services across most of the lifespan. I was officially recognized by the Army for the creation of a Memory Pathway to better care for individuals with suspected dementia. I also performs specialty exam for the military, such as aeromedical, security clearance, high risk positions, and fitness for duty. I have completed evaluations, testified, and served as an expert consultant in Courts Martial cases for both defense and prosecution. Since 2018, I have served as a TBI consultant to the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment and 1st Special Forces Group in training their 18D medics, as well as contributing to their cutting-edge concussion management protocol.

I have been active in scholarly work, contributing to leading ideas and research in the field. Part of that work included publishing several book chapters and many peer-reviewed articles that have been cited by other scholars over 200 times. Topics include traumatic brain injury, cognitive functioning and retirement decisions in aging surgeons, Neuropsychology in Primary Care, functional somatic syndromes, validity testing, psychometric properties of cognitive instruments, and most recently a neuropsychologist’s guide to aeromedical examinations. I also serve as a reviewer for several professional journals.

I am active in Psychology Intern and Resident training programs, assist in the training of Resident Physicians from multiple medical specialties (including Neurology and Family Medicine), and serve as a mentor for candidates seeking Board Certification in Neuropsychology. I have presented hundreds of training seminars and professional workshops ranging from small groups at local hospitals to audiences of thousands at national conferences. I was recognized by the Army for my contribution to training future military health professionals in 2017, and in 2022 received the LTC Munaretto Outstanding Educator Award along with a Civilian Service Commendation Medal.

I am a recognized expert in CPT (current procedural terminology) coding and was one of handful of contributors to the Defense Health Agency’s Behavioral Health Coding Handbook released in 2020.

I perform criminal forensic exams and provide expert consultation and testimony for the military in Courts Martial cases, including high profile cases requiring OCONUS travel.
